E122 Archetypes for Men with Special Guest James Rapson

E122 Introduction

Throughout my journey as a man and leader in the field of men’s personal development, one particular approach has stayed with me over time: the use of male archetypes to help men on their Hero’s Journey, whatever path that might be for each man.

It was how I was trained as a young man and I have had a love affair with these archetypes ever since. As the philosophical backbone of the Mankind Projects New Warrior Training, work in these concepts have continually provided a forward path with upward movement.

The use of archetypes has many dimensions, as the great philosopher, author, and therapist Carl Jung helped us to understand. Archetypes can bring us into mythical and transcendent realms where the collective and personal intersect. They also act as a diagnostic lens where we can read what is happening in humanity be looking in any direction: inward, outward, personal, or collective. Once your inner eye starts to focus on myth and archetypes, you start to see with new vision. A new vision that is full of magic and possibility as to where we are going and how you might properly play your role.

Archetypes are great for enlarging the context. For making the conversation bigger. The larger the context for our unfoldment, the more excited I get. With that in mind, let’s go have a conversation about male archetypes with our friend James Rapson.

E122 Final Thoughts-

I hope you enjoyed that conversation as much as I did. If working with male archetypes is interesting to you, I happen to emphasize this approach in my coaching practice.

I currently have a Life Renewal Program for Men that helps you work with these four archetypes plus the archetypal Hero. I love working with this framework and I can certainly help you create them as powerful tools for whatever transition or challenge you are facing.

If you are interested and want to get started or are just curious as to what this would be like, I offer the first session for free, no strings attached. This is a way for you to see how you might benefit and if working with me is in alignment with you and where you want to go as a man.

E113: Awakening the Mythic King   E113 Introduction Hello Basecampers, come sit around the fire as Tony Rezac does a short riff on awakening the mythic King. Instead of a controlling “ruling over others” dynamic,…

E61 Firestarters for Men: The Male Archetypes

I have talked about and teach within a framework of a collective masculinity expressed through five primary archetypes. These are Lover, Warrior, Magician,  and King. The four horsemen of the mature masculine. As well as a fifth,  the archetypal Hero.

I like to think of it as a sort of archetypal compass.  The Hero will be in the middle and the four archetypes in four directions acting as allies to the Hero, which is you.

Since one of my functions within my mission is to bring men new perspectives and new resources, I thought you might find it useful to unpack some of these collectives. Additionally, I thought if I could share with you some of the ways that men access and express these energies in the world, it would give you not only an overview but some tools that will help you where “the rubber meets the road”, so to speak.

Whenever I lead men’s groups, I always bring attention to these archetypes as a way to activate potential. Men are better able to activate the Hero within if they have a roadmap and allies. It is here in a more archetypal way of seeing or what Jung called the archetypal mind that men can find the start of new chapters for themselves.

I will go through each of these five archetypes  and give you a snapshot as well as access points to help you get in touch with these important parts of yourself.

I hope you enjoy E61: The Male Archetypes.

E13: The Hero Within with Special Guest  Carol Pearson

E13 Introduction

One of my favorite books about archetypes and the Hero’s Journey is Carol Pearson’s The Hero Within.  Carol writes,

“When the heroic journey was thought to be for special people only, the rest of us just found a secure niche and stayed there. Now we have no secure places in which to hide and be safe. In the contemporary world, if we do not step out on our quest, it will come get us. We are being thrust on the the journey. That is what we must all learn the requirements.”

This statement (and book) resonate with me deeply. There is an awakening happening in people. Staying in your routines and habits will blunt your sensitivity to the messages that are trying to stir and awaken you. Each one of us has a unique journey and a unique contribution to make in this movement.

I see people from all walks of life living heroic lives. I see it in a thousand quiet ways….people in meditation and contemplation, people learning to love one another (and themselves), people being honest about how they have been hurt or wounded and doing the important work to move through that hurt.

The whole thing leaves me with immense gratitude. Gratitude for people,  gratitude for our earth, gratitude to be given a chance to exercise our courage on such a wonderful stage. And gratitude for the Divine. I will leave you with one last quote from Joseph Campbell, who knew a thing or two about the Hero’s Journey:

“Heroes are agents of change. The hero’s task always has been to bring new life to an ailing culture. The dragon to be slain is precisely the monster of the status quo. Holdfast keeper of the past.”

Thank you for listening!
